People start running for a lot of reasons. There’s a lot of reasons to run. Some run for general health, some to lose weight, some so they can eat more food, some to challenge themselves, some just feel like it…
I started running initially to lose weight. I quickly realized that losing weight is not the only benefit, but that the benefits spanned more than physical…there are mental and emotional benefits too!
The Amway River Bank Run
Here in Grand Rapids, we have the annual Amway River Bank Run held every May. Started in 1978, this race is the largest 25k in the whole country. Today, the race draws over 22,000 participants each year. What better way to jump into running than to train for the River Bank?
Did we mention we’re part of the 2020 Road Warrior team??

Many of the benefits of running are obvious: burn calories, gain strength, and better your cardiovascular health. But, there are several other butt-kicking reasons to start running. Here I will list 7 of my favorites.
7 Reasons to Run the Amway River Bank Run
- Save some cash.
Forget those expensive gym memberships that can cost you up to $100 a month. Outside of a pair of running shoes, running is free. Stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls carry activewear at deeply discounted prices, too.
2. Eat more carbs.
Are you on the keto train? I agree with eating less of the bad carbs, but running gives you an excuse to indulge in some yummy carbs. During more intense training runs, increasing your carb intake can help your performance and boost your mood while you’re out there pounding the pavement.
3. Live Longer
Need I say more? Runners have fewer disabilities than their less active counterparts, and they have live longer. Active people visit the doctor less and reduce their cancer risk by up to 30%.
4. Get a Natural Glow
Working up a sweat can rid your pores of the junk that clogs them and causes breakouts. A good sweat can keep things fresh and healthy. (my face is extremely fresh and healthy if you measure by sweat!)
5. Improve self-esteem
Running can boost your confidence in many different ways. Running outside especially helps! (yes even in Michigan) Research shows that exercising in green spaces results in lowered blood pressure and increased self-esteem.
6. Get an energy boost
Rather than laying on the couch, going for a run can increase energy and decrease fatigue.

7. Meet new friends
Forget trying to meet people at the bars or online! Check out local running groups (Amway RBR Community Run and Perrin No Problems Run are a great place to start!) to hit the road with like-minded people. A delicious Perrin brew is optional!
The River Bank Run is Calling You
