Does the thought of a treadmill make you cringe? If you’re not into the traditional gym, no need to worry; Boutique Gyms, small gyms who offer specific group classes, often in an upscale studio, are on the rise in Grand Rapids.
Thankfully, there are plenty of choices to fit every taste!
Take Your Pick – Gyms in Grand Rapids
Perhaps the coolest thing about boutique gyms is that many do not require a traditional membership. Many places offer drop-in and punch card rates, in addition to a monthly membership option.
At Grand Rapids Girl, we’ve had the distinct pleasure of being invited to sample a few places around town.
Below are some of our favorite Grand Rapids gyms:
Crossfit Gyms in Grand Rapids
Crossfit workouts are all the rage right now. And, why not! Torching calories in quick bursts is a fun and effective way to get and stay in shape.
At Burn Boot Camp, you will find most classes will use weights and other equipment like bands or battle ropes. You will strengthen and tone by completing multiple reps in short bursts of 90 seconds, up to 6 minutes at a time before you rotate.
You may wonder what you signed yourself up for, but believe me, after you’re done with your workout you’ll feel great about yourself and what you accomplished. Check out our full write up on our blog if you want to know more.
Barre Studios in Grand Rapids
Studio Barre in East Grand Rapids
Barre based workouts have risen in popularity over the past several years, no doubt because we all would love to have a body like a ballerina, wouldn’t we!
We had a chance to experience the barre workout at Studio Barre. Let’s just say, if you want to tighten that booty, the barre is the place to go! It offers many other benefits, in fact, we gave owner Anna Chapman a challenge to explain them by spelling out the word “barre”.
Studio Barre offers monthly packages, and also offers drop-in rate and punch cards. They also offer local products, gifts and current fitness and lifestyle apparel.
Boutique Fitness Coaching
Lately I’ve been working out at Allegro Coaching in Eastown and have been really enjoying it for a variety of reasons. I really appreciate the neighborhood feel and the fact that they are super committed to the Eastown area and giving back to our community.
The other members were all very friendly right off the bat and I literally made work out buddies on the first day. They offer over 40 large group classes per week which means I have no excuse to skip a workout. My personal schedule varies daily so the range in class times they offer is very important to me. I also appreciate the wide variety of classes they offer. Switching it up is key to not getting bored with your workout! During a week I’ll try Body Pump, Circuits, Pilates or TRX. The diversity in classes keeps me out of a rut and I think the physical results are more rewarding as well. They also offer wellness/fitness workshops, massage, personal training, a post workout “fuel” bar and much more!
The reasonable rates they offer is the icing on the cake. Allegro Coaching is an amazing value and I would recommend them to everyone!
Yoga in Grand Rapids
When is the last time you did something meaningful and adventurous with your favorite people?
Happy Soul Yoga is an on-site traveling yoga company who brings the yoga to YOU; whether that’s at your home, the beach, a local park, a hotel, your place of employment, or any other location, the choice is yours!
We had the pleasure of hosting a girls night with Jessica in the community room at the Arena Place downtown. When our guests arrived, they enjoyed a nice charcuterie board and wine and mingled for a while before we got down to yoga. It was a fun, personal, customized experience that we would highly recommend for any get together you have planned!
Fitness Clubs in Grand Rapids
When talking about Grand Rapids gyms, you would be missing something if you did not mention MVP Sports Club. If you enjoy a full-service health club, then MVP is a great choice. They have it all! Enjoy boot camps, yoga, and fitness classes all under one roof!
MVP offers fit programs for all ages, indoor and outdoor pools (location depending) and even a casual open community work-space, created exclusively for MVP Sports Clubs All-Star members!
They also offer daycare for kids ages 0-11, birthday parties and kids (and parents!) night out events throughout the year. MVP is a great option for families to enjoy all the benefits.
Tip: MVP offers challenges for their members to attend as many classes as they can! In return, they earn guest passes to bring their friends for free. We enjoyed this little benefit ourselves. 2 for the price of 1!
